In January 2007, wpd opened its first office in Finland in Espoo. This marked the founding of wpd Finland Oy 15 years ago. In addition to the Swedish subsidiary wpd Scandinavia AB in Stockholm, the internationally active German renewable energy project developer and operator wpd has thus established a second important foothold in Northern Europe.

The commissioning of the first projects in Finland was recorded between 2015 and 2016. A total of 45 wind turbines (WTGs) were built, spread over three projects, all of which are supported by feed-in tariffs.

The Kannus Kuuronkallio project with 14 WTGs was wpd’s first market-based investment in Finland. Here, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was concluded with Google during 2018. One year later, three PPAs had already been concluded with the paper manufacturer UPM, the trading company Kesko and the mining company Boliden, which led to the construction of the wind farms Karhunnevankangas with 33 WTGs and Nuolivaara with 17 WTGs. In total, wpd has realized onshore projects in Finland with a total capacity of 200 MW, has another 288 MW under construction and a project pipeline of more than 1,000 MW.

Finally, in 2021, the opening of the office in Oulu, northern Finland, allowed the company to establish a second location in the country to accommodate its growing market presence in Finland. With the successes, the team of wpd Finland also continues to grow steadily, currently 25 employees are working on the expansion of the project pipeline and contribute with new project successes to the energy transition in Northern Europe. The 100th wind turbine planned by wpd in Finland is to be erected this year. wpd Finland Oy has established itself as one of the leading project developers in the Northern European market for onshore wind energy and continues to expand.

“Looking back, we have achieved a number of very good successes over the past 15 years. Finland has set an ambitious goal to become CO2-free by 2035. We have a good project pipeline to contribute significantly to achieving this goal,” says Heikki Peltomaa, Managing Director of wpd Finland Oy. “I am very proud to be part of this team, which is taking the energy transition important steps forward through its daily work.”
